Crusade No. 18

The crusade this month over at the GPP Street Team blog is to 'cut it out'. To design and cut a stencil or rubberstamp. I am sure some of you could guess that I would be carving some cogs since I love them and can't seem to find any cool cog rubberstamps out there. The top five stamps in the pic below I made for me. The smaller black cog I did years ago and still like since it has gotten some wear and tear and looks battered up when stamped. For the numbers rubberstamp: the numbers are significant and it was intentional to have the numbers backwards when stamped.
Now if you look right above you will see the 'M', train and face which were all made for Montana. He loves circles so I had to do the circles around his initial. That face is supposed to be the Iron Giant and Montana would have me draw it all the time on his papers and chalkboard. He is still in the scribbling everywhere stage but finally started to draw the Iron Giant the other week. He would draw it really huge. After seeing this post of Michelle's(look at the bottom of her post), I got the idea to take one of his gajillion drawings of the robot and resize it on the computer and then make a rubberstamp of his own drawing. So below is his little version of the Iron Giant, which by the way is a great little movie and I can't believe that it has already been 9 years since it was released. Montana is 3 and loves it and can do the scenes along with the movie, lol.
Edited: Michelle mentioned the 'perfect mini-circle trick'. I made my solid mini circles with a japanese screw punch. You only want to push it in about 1/8 of an inch. Just enough to give you a good outline of the circle. Then you can come from the outside of the circle with your carving tool up to the outline you just made and the pieces will pop out around the circle to give you a perfect solid circle shape. That is how i made my circles. If you have those round metal mini tins you can use the bottom or lid in the same manner to make a perfect solid circle. Even older cookie cutters that have the sharp edges would work by pushing them into your stamp material. (I think cookie cutters now are a little more rounded and not as sharp.) So anything that you can find that has a sharp outline that you can press into the block would work in getting a perfect outlined solid image. Hope all that made sense :o)

I'm just picking myself off the floor. LOOK at all the great stamps! So personal in the choice of design and so nicely done! (You figured out the perfect mini-circle trick!!) Love the cogs and the numbers and that heart! And how precious to have Montana's drawing as a stamp!!! Thanks Audrey for sharing with the other crusaders. You inspire us to keep carving and to think of images that are clever signatures to just us.

You're so awesome! I saw that you left a comment on everyone's blog that participated in my inspiration challenge. Thank you for your kindness. The other night my hubby and I had a date night. We went to dinner, then the bookstore. That's what we wanted to do! LOL! I was looking at all the art and craft mags, and I came across this one where I was going ape over this person's work. Lo and behold, I look and it's Audrey H! That's my FRIEND!!!! I'm so proud of you, and felt so special that I knew someone famous!!!! Too bad all the other people there weren't as cool as me! LOL! Love your work! Thanks for your friendship!

Great tip, to push the Japanese screw punch only part of the way into the rubber! The sharp cookie cutter tip is great, as well! Thanks for visiting my blog! :)

I love your stamps and have to add my applause to the wonderful stamp of Montana's drawing. Montana has great taste. I think Iron Giant is one of the great animated flicks. It was made by the brilliant Brad Bird who went on to great things at Pixar with The Incredibles and Ratatouille. (And as the voice of Roz in Monsters, Inc.) Can you tell that I'm the lucky mom of an teenaged boy who loves animation? I wish you similar joy!

Hi Audrey, I love your creativity! Yours and Montana's....=). Thanks for coming by to wish me a Happy Easter. I warmly wish the same to you & your family!! ~~Christ made the difference and he alone...where we spend eternity, if we personally confess ourselves as sinners and accept his sacrifical death for us. I don't think most folks realize the outcome for eternity when we ponder what it means and how to become a Christian/and born again.~~ Hugs to you too! I've just switched to the new Blogger format and love it. I see you have all three columns used...its very impressive...smiling here. Now to find out how to switch the background. Am I never satisfied? ~grin~ I just put two (yes, two!) clocks on my sidebar and am bragging to my menfolk about it-like it was my brainchild...duh! =)

Hello Audrey,

I found your blog through your comment on mine ( on the crusade). Your name is wellknown by me because of the work you often submit to the magazines of Stampington. Some of the people's names get stuck in my head because I like their work a lot... so does yours...

I like the cogs ( have to look the word up in a dictionary, I had never heard of this word...), the numbers look very good and the iron giant.. lovely idea for your son... but I' absolutely adore your carving of your son's drawing !

I'm already fond all of my life of toddler's drawings (I'm a teacher...), so this one is great.
My kids are teenagers now, but I think I stroll trough their drawings and look for an example to carve.

you really should make a carving of your son's face! ( like I did from my daughter).
If you use Photoshop, you can alter a photo in a stamp, but you can also photocopy a photo ( with good contrasts) and color the contrast in with black and white ( that's how my daughter did it in artacademy) and make a stamp of it.

I show you one day my carved stamps of my kids drawings and you show me your son ?
Have fun !

greetings
Inge (from Belgium)

Wow that numbers stamp really caught my eye - it must be even more interesting when stamped as the numbers are backwards. The cogs are great too, but most of all I LOVE Montana's stamp... I have a 3.5 year old and have to do this with him... alos now have to go get the Iron Giant to watch. Thanks for all the neat tips as well!

my little girl loves The Iron Giant!
Did you know that "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson ( I think that is right) is the voice of the Giant? I don't know if it was his first real gig ornot, but it has to be close!
My girl was addicted to drawing Plankton - Nick used to do these quick "how to draw" segments that were awesome, but I have not seen them in awhile.
